Milan to Paris & Rome – Travel Tips?

Hi All,
I will be in Milan, Italy for about 3 months on a business trip. I would like to visit Paris & Rome on 2 week ends (Saturday & Sunday).

The train fare from Milan appears expensive and I am looking for flight options. What are your suggestions. My biggest problem is I dont have a credit card (in Euro) to book online. Please suggest must visit spots of Paris and other travel tips.

I also request your inputs for travelling to Rome over train. Is the stay (Hotel room rent) costly there ?

Please share best spots, travel tips and money saving tips.

Advance thanks,
RP

I live about two hours east of Milan and personally I prefer the train for a weekend trip to Paris. If you take the night train, you can sleep along the way and arrive in Paris fairly early without having to deal with getting to the airport early, check-in, security, getting from the airport into Paris, … If you buy tickets in advance of your trip on the trains there are some very good fares. The standard 2nd class fare on the night train is 100 euro, but there are several tiers below that. The cheapest rate is the “smart” fare. You can get a berth in a 6 bed cuchette for 35 euro. Or there are some tickets at the MOOVE fare of 45 euro for a berth. Or the GO fare of 60 euro. Or the SWITCH fare of 80 euro. Obviously, the cheaper tickets sell out fast. But these fares are all currently available for trains next month. I didn’t check later this month.

There are also big discounts on the fares for the fast trains between Milan and Rome – a 60% discount for buying a ticket 30 days in advance, 30% for 15 day advance purchase or 15% for 7 day advance purchase. http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD

There are hundreds of hotels in both Paris and Rome. I use the venere.com site for booking hotels both here in Italy and in France. You can sort by price and area of the city to find something that suits your needs. You might consider the Hotel Romano in Rome. It’s right across the street from the Forum and is often an excellent value. http://www.venere.com/
