How to pay off Credit Cards?
When I was between 18-20 yers old I racked up about $15,000 in credit card and stuff like that. I then moved to another country and didn’t pay any thing, so now I have horrible credit. I am 24 and moved back to the US and don’t know if I should go to a credit consolidater or handle it on my own.. Please help.
Once everything is payed off will my credit still be bad?
You can call and try to negotiate. Oftentimes, creditors/collection agencies will settle for a percentage of the debt owed.
Your credit is already trashed for 7 years after the items went into collections. Paid off via settlement is also a derogatory but not as bad as a default or judgment and paying them off will not remove the original charged off item. You may be able to arrange to have the collections items removed when you pay them if you get that in writing beforehand.
Also, what state did you live in when you incurred these debts? Each state has its own statute of limitations and the debts may be time barred for collection purposes, however they will remain on your credit report, whether time barred or not, for 7 years from the time the debt went into collections. Be aware, however, that if you negotiate payment, and fail to make the agreed upon payment or payoff, the SOL clock starts all over again from that point.
