What can a collection agency UK legally in Canada do to me?

Background: My wife and I moved back to Canada after living in the United Kingdom for three years in September '05. We still had some debts you owe on our Credit Cards HSBC, but left a balance in our accounts to cover the minimum payments until they were able to get a loan to pay them. Well, my wife ran account out of money before we could get a loan, and without any notification HSBC closed the credit card account and handed it to a collection agency, Call Wescot Credit Services. I have called and talked to them, only to be intimidated and threatened with legal action if they did not immediately return the entire balance. My question is: What legal action can be taken if I am in Canada? I read that our Canadian credit rating will not be affected, but can send agents fighting for our door? thanks for the responses.
